graduation poem: dedicated to Marcos Rodriguez and Dan Freedman - 2022

Here we sit and stand and float to remember past and future
Remember our teacher who like a god brought us light.
He is here now.
He is proud.

Remember the butterfly crushed by rain
Taken into the classroom
Nurtured by it’s students
Set free into the world
Where it will soar, and fall, and someday soar again

Remember us
The people we were back then
The people we have become
The people we left behind.

Changes are no more moral than a needle above flesh.
They hurt always,
But sometimes they are the cure and sometimes the poison.

Remember this very moment when you felt everything, or maybe nothing at all.
Bask in the nothing-everythingness of right now
Let it sing in your ears
Let it run down your cheeks

Let it hurt

Let it comfort

Remember how it flies up and away

A monarch butterfly.

A ghost.

A memory.
